Q banding: A staining
technique in which metaphase chromosomes are stained with quinacrine
mustard to produce temporary fluorescent Q bands on the chromosomes.
quadriceps femoris:
A package of four muscle that join in a large tendon surrounding
the patella and attaching to the anterior tuberosity of the tibia.
The largest of these, rectus femoris, has an ilium attachment on
the anterior inferior iliac spine and brim of the acetabulum. The
bundle flexes the hip and extends the knee.
quadrumanous: Four-handed;
as in quadrumanous climbing.
quadrupedalism: Four-footed
posture and locomotion.
quantitative genetics:
Study of the inhereitance of quantitative traits.
quantitative (continuous)
traits: Traits that show a continuous variation in phenotype over
a range.
quartz: A mineral composed
of the elements silicon and oxygen (silicon dioxide) that occurs
in multiple forms.
quartz crystal: A hexagonal
crystal of silicon dioxide.
quartzite: Generalized
term for a sandstone that has been recrystallized or cemented (see
orthoquartzite and metaquartzite).
